CHATEAU CLIMENS 2006 - Premier Cru Sauternes

38.99

Stunning Sauternes and Barsac First Growth.  Wonderful balance of power and finesse.  Beautiful bouquet of pineapple, vanilla and apricot with flavours of quince, honey and candied fruits.  Good acidity, well rounded and velvety smooth.  Ages exceptionally well.

100% Semillon.  12.5% abv. 75cl

Amazing wine. I've been mad about Sauternes since my first sip a few years back. Climens is on the lighter side, not sticky sweet. Very pleased to see that you stock it.

Description & Press Reviews:
Wine Style: Sweet Bordeaux / Dessert Wine

Chateau Climens is one of the great white sweet wines of Bordeaux and is a First Growth (Premier Cru) from the Barsac region.  These are the wines created by Noble Rot (Botrytis Cinerea) and Climens is one of the rare single variety growths of region, showing fabulous expression of the Semillon grape in its wines. Such wines can have a life of 50 to 100 years in great vintages.

Climens dates back to the 1500s and its reputation over the centuries has gained it the nickname of the 'Lord of Barsac'. It is owned by the Lurton family (who also own
Chateaux Brane Cantenac and Durfort Vivens).

The Chateau takes its name “climens” from the local dialect for “poor or infertile land” - which is ironic as this terroir has created one of the best wines in Barsac, producing wine which in some vintages rivals the famous Chateau d'Yquem in terms of quality and price.

Robert Parker 94 points (out of 100).  "Proprietor Berenice Lurton continues to turn out one of the utterly profound wines from the Barsac Sauternes region. The 2006 is not up there with their perfect 2001, but it is a beautiful wine and stands out as one of the top wines of 2006. Medium gold, with a slightly more advanced color than I am used to seeing in a young Climens, the wine displays waxy honeyed pineapple and delicate marmalade and citrus notes with a restrained use of new oak. The wine cuts a full-bodied swath across the palate with terrific acidity, freshness, and moderate sweetness. This is a beauty, but perhaps on a much faster evolutionary track than some of their greatest vintages."

Jancis Robinson 18 points (out of 20).  "Broader and spicier and more oily on the nose - linseed. Similar flavours, with almond paste and crisp barley sugar flavours added. Dense, powerful and savoury (oak?) but still intensely pure and extremely fresh on the finish.
