The great sweet wine of Sauternes is legendary for its layers of complex and intriguing flavours, its capacity to age for decades and its labour intensive methods of production: it's said that it takes one whole grape vine to make enough wine to fill a single glass! Bordeaux's dessert wine is beautifully aromatic but is also perfectly balanced with a mouth-watering acidity. Sauternes is not a heavy or cloying style of sweet Bordeaux but a vibrant, supple and lively one. These types of wines are often characterized by rich candied fruit, toasted nut and honeyed flavours.

Bordeaux also produces the increasingly rare semi-sweet dessert wine known as Bordeaux Moelleux - which you don't often see outside France. This type of delicious wine is fresh and expressive with the sensation of sweetness being ethereal and light. Bordeaux Moelleux is very fragrant and packed with flavours of nectar-like fruit, delicate notes of praline and honeysuckle.

Both these styles of sweet wines are fantastic aperitifs but are also a brilliant food wines that will accompany much more than desserts. They pair very well with cheeses, pâtés, poultry, feathered game, fish and seafood, chocolate and sweets, as well as spicy Asian cuisine.
