Not too heavy or over sweet, apricot citrus taste with hints of honey, a fine dessert wine. We had a good selection of pates/cheeses and nuts with the red wines and finished the Sauternes with homemade truffles which were an excellent accompniment.

I bought a couple of bottles of the St Helene over Christmas had it with my Christmas Pud on your recommendation and it was beautiful. I have subsequently had the other bottle with some cheeses although very nice I prefer it with my puddings.

As far as price goes this is a very competitively priced Sauterne and a fine example of wines from that appellation.

I am new to the wine game and now getting into it. I like reading your blogs as they are very informative. I also like trying new wines and this sauterne was a first for me. I have experimented with it on several occasions with desserts, cheese and on its own. As a dessert wine it is wonderful full of fruit and very complementary, with cheeses I am not so sure but of all the cheeses I tried it with Roquefort was the best. On its own a very nice aperitif.

Description:
Wine Style:  Sweet White

Château de Sainte Hélène is a exceptional sweet dessert wine from Sauternes. It is the second wine of the Second Growth (2ème Cru) Château de Malle, owned by the Comtes de Bournazel who have 400 years of wine making experience.

Sainte Hélène has the creamy sweet taste of honeysuckle, orange peel, apricots, cinnamon and honey. It is made by the same team as the first wine and the cultivation of the vineyard is carried out with the same measure of rigorous attention and meticulous care. The wine is made following the same classical tradition as for great Sauternes and is the result of a draconian selection process.

Making the great wines of Sauternes is labour intensive - grapes have to be hand picked so that only those with Noble Rot are selected and yields can be low. It is said that one grape vine only makes enough juice to make one glass of wine. Although these are dessert wines their sweetness is not cloying due to their zesty acidity.  The wine should be served chilled at around 11ºC and these wines have an incredible ability to age and continue to develop for decades.

Traditionally Sauternes are paired with desserts, crystallised fruits and chocolate but Château Sainte Hélène can accompany fish such as monk fish, prawns, scallops and sea bass as well as Roquefort cheese. Chicken is very often served with Sauternes and creamy sauces made with ginger, honey and spices bring out the fragrance of the wine.

Recommended food and wine pairing:

Sauternes is magical with Foie Gras and Chateau Sainte Hélène 2004 would be perfect with Foie Gras d’Oie with Black Truffles (goose) , Foie Gras de Canard de Landes (duck) or Fois Gras d’Oie de Strasbourg (made by one of the three most reputed foie gras makers in France).

Try it with strong cheese such as Roquefort - the Organic Roquefort Papillon (2011 Gold Medal) is great, being one of the most reputed Roquefort to come from France.
