Les Vignes d’Icare is our Signature Saint Julien, chosen as a fantastic example of the wines from this famous region. The wine makers behind Les Vignes d’Icare are the Borie-Manoux and Casteja families, who have been specialising in producing top flight Bordeaux Grand Cru Classes since the 1800s.
Saint Julien lies on two plateaus between Pauillac and Margaux on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary and has the highest proportion of classified estates of all the regions in Bordeaux – 11 in total. Saint Julien wines sing with a beautiful harmony and the appellation is characterized by finesse. The wines are dense, powerful and refined with a beautiful balance of perfume, structure and mineral fruit.
Music, song and art are the inspirations behind the name of Les Vignes d’Icare (the Vines of Icarus). According to myth the Greek muse of music, Euterpe, was the mother of Icarus and the wine is named in memory of her aspiring son who sought to fly to the sun. Euterpe means ‘the giver of delight’ and she is often depicted as playing the double flute alongside Dionysis, the Greek god of wine.
Les Vignes d’Icare is superb with beef and steak including chateaubriand, beef wellington and rich casseroles such as daube of beef or oxtail. It also pairs exceptionally well with venison, pigeon and duck; truffles, hard cheeses, liver and kidneys.
