Domaine Georges Lignier is a much respected, traditional Burgundy producer renowned for the purity of expression in their wines. The Lignier family can trace its wine making roots back to the 19th century and the Lignier name is historically synonymous with the village of Morey. Today the Domaine’s wine are made by Georges Lignier’s nephew Benoit Stehly. The Domaine’s holdings are astounding and include several of the greatest vineyards in the Cotes de Nuits region; notably the Grand Crus (Clos de la Roche, Clos St Denis, Bonnes Mares, Gevrey Chambertin Combottes, Charmes Chambertin) as well as Premier Crus and Village Wines.
The village AOC Morey Saint Denis has 5 Grand Crus (of which Domaine Lignier has a stake in 3) and is rich in Premier Crus. Clos des Ormes is one of Morey Saint Denis’ most prestigious Premier Cru climats and sits just below the Grand Cru vineyard of Clos de la Roche. Clos des Ormes was originally founded by the monks at the nearby Citeaux Abbey and the vineyard is known for its perfumed, structured style of wine.
Long lived and ageworthy Domaine Georges Lignier’s Clos des Ormes comes from the 1996 vintage which produced beautifully balanced wines across Burgundy from good domaines. Mature and poised, this Clos des Ormes is ideal with guinea fowl and pheasant as well as goose, turkey, pork and duck. It’s also good with roast beef, steak and mature cheeses.
