pf paysThis elegant Pouilly Fume is a special, signed, Cuvee from Nicolas Emereau, Maitre de Chai (Cellar Master) and oenologist at Alliance Loire. As Cellar Master Nicolas has chosen the best Cuvee from his vineyards that represents the peak of the appellation and given his name to this special vintage as his flagship wine. It is an excellent ambassador for Pouily Fume and embodies all the qualities of this first rate AOC.

Pouilly Fume is famous for its universally recognisable aromas of smoke and wet slate; it’s one of the Loire’s most venerated wines. The little appellation sits around the town of Pouilly sur Loire opposite Sancerre on the left bank of the Loire. The town’s name is derived from Pauliacum (after the Roman Paulus who had an estate there in the 5th century) which became ‘Pouilly’ and the appellation gained the addition of ‘Fume’ thanks to the characteristic smokiness of its wines.pouilly fume glass

The smoky aroma is attributed to the local terroir. The most famous soils here are Kimmeridigian limestone containing fossilised oyster shells and limestone clays peppered with flints. The local name for Sauvignon Blanc is ‘fume’ and the distinctive aroma is known as ‘pierre a fusil’ which refers to the smoky smell of a fired gun when the flint is struck.

A lovely glass in its own right, Poully Fume Maitre de Chai also pairs well with seafood such as oysters, scallops and crab. It’s delicious with turbot, cod, prawns, tuna and monkfish, cheese fondues, duck breast, goats cheese, quiche and dishes with lemon sauces such as lemon chicken.
